Estate teas
Estate teas take their name and particular characteristics from
the region they are grown. It is the farm or plantation that is
typically in high altitude 5300 feet (and above) sea level that
is what produces a finer tea quality. Because of this simple fact
tea from Darjeeling Estate will be different then tea grown in Ceylon.
These are two of the more popular estate teas.
Darjeeling Estates also known as the Darjeeling gardens is one of
finest tea estates and is well known as “The Champagne of
Teas” producing a very balanced flavor that combines delicately
sweet, floral characteristics with a richness and delightful flavor.
Darjeeling Estates has an altitude of 6000 feet and has a beautiful
sloping terrain. The plants grow in a cooler humid climate perfect
for this type of tea growing which gives the leaves a superior flavor.
The harvest is between April and May and 2nd flush in June and July.
If you are lucky enough to drink a cup of tea from the Darjeeling
Estates you will be hooked and rightfully so.
Ceylon Estate tea is another top quality tea, and the flavor is
different than from the Darjeeling Estate tea. With elevations between
3000-8000 feet this sunny Sri Lanka estate thrives all year long.
The harvest time in the eastern district is late June to the end
of August and in the western districts from the beginning of February
to mid March. It is the hot, humid foothills that allow the leaves
to be harvested all year round. You will get an elegant tea with
a flowery and sometimes nutty sweet aroma. This tea has a solid
following with tea lovers.
There are other estate tea farms and plantations around the world
that produce excellent teas. The beauty of a tea from one of these
estates is truly quality with a superior taste, a tea lover’s
dream.
