Moroccan mint tea
Moroccan’s love their tea. And, because of their love for
tea it is really more of an art form to them then just drinking
a regular cup of tea; it is part of their culture. Morocco is one
of the biggest tea exporters in the world and rightfully so.
Moroccan mint tea is one steeped in deep tradition. A green tea
with mint which is what Moroccan mint tea is, seems like it would
be just a simple drink, however, the Moroccan people use it as a
hospitality drink. Typically prepared by the head of the family
and served to his guests, it is impolite to refuse it.
Throughout the centuries, the different regions of Morocco have
discovered a few alternate ways to prepare this tea. In the winter,
when mint is hard to find, sometimes the leaves of wormwood are
substituted for mint leaves. This gives the tea a really bitter
taste. Another region finds that by adding Lemon Verbena this will
give the tea a lemony flavor. Today, you can now get Moroccan mint
tea blended with other herbs or if you want you can mix it yourself.
The original form though is truly the best as the tea is very aromatic,
fresh and soothing.
The mint in the tea can be either spearmint or peppermint. Grown
in the area known as ancient Berbers a special place indeed near
the Atlas Mountains in Morocco where the soil is rich with a plentiful
water supply. This unique area is what gives this tea its refreshing
qualities and is why Moroccans can drink 10 cups a day!
So whether you are preparing a pot for friends or enjoying a cup
for yourself, the tradition of hospitality is always going to surround
this tea and for that reason enjoy knowing that drinking this tea
is a very good thing indeed.
