Rooibos tea

Rooibos tea is a little known tea, that many have found to be a wonderful addition to your morning, afternoon, and evening tea drinking rituals. Otherwise known as bush, or red tea. It has been consumed in South Africa for many generations, however has begun to gain popularity throughout the world.

In the production of Rooibos tea, the leaves are usually oxidized prior to steeping. It is this process that helps to give the tea it’s well-known reddish brown coloration, as well as enhancing the fragrant taste of this wonderful tea. Rooibos can be steeped much like any normal black teas would. However, there is little worry about a heightened bitterness when it is steeped too long. It is known to have been left to steep for days at a time, to gain a deeper more rich reddish brown coloration. Of course making it referred to as the “red tea” to many. However despite this lack of bitterness, it is it’s ability to be steeped for prolonged periods of time that make it less useful for re-steeping later.

Due to the sweetness of this tea, few people need sugar or honey to lighten any bitterness. However it is common in South Africa to add milk and sugar to Rooibos tea. While it is readily accessible in South Africa, it may indeed become a challenge to find elsewhere. Although, there are specialty shops both locally and online that offer Rooibos tea for purchase. Allowing you to take part in this tasty and fragrant tea.
