Drinking tea while pregnant

While there are some teas you can drink while you are pregnant that are safe there are also some teas you should avoid especially if you are pregnant. Most mothers avoid caffeine, nicotine and even aspirin when they find out they are pregnant and they don’t think anything of drinking herbal teas. The thing about herbal teas is that they can contain some herbs that are actually harmful to you and your unborn baby.

Green tea is one of the most popular teas around because of its antioxidants and other benefits. It is also very high in caffeine. A cup or two a day while pregnant should be safe, but really limit it to only one or twice a week if at all.
Drinking teas with anise, catnip, chamomile, comfrey, ephedra (called ma huang in traditional Chinese medicine), European mistletoe, hibiscus, horehound, Labrador, lemongrass, licorice root, mugwort, pennyroyal, raspberry leaf, rosemary, sage, sassafras, stinging nettle leaf, vetiver, and yarrow have been linked with miscarriage.

Drinking teas made from ginger, lime blossom, peppermint, roasted barley, rose hips, and thyme are probably safe to drink occasionally in small amounts while you are pregnant or nursing. The key here is in small amounts.

What you want is a healthy baby. The time you spend being pregnant is a challenging time anyway and it seems like it can absolutely take forever before that baby is born and then you are going to nurse the baby. How can you go without your favorite tea for that long? Well, the fact is it may seem like a long time before the baby is born and even longer for them to quit nursing, but in reality in the overall picture of things it is really a very short time in your life. If you can avoid drinking any teas during this time would be the best. If you simply can’t, watch out for caffeine in the tea, and check with your doctor about any herbal tea that you want to drink. This is really a gift you are giving to your baby and that is a really good thing.
